David McCrory, a leading light of Cloud Foundry, left VMware and has already started a new gig at Warner Music Group where he is a senior vice president. McCrory announced his news in a blog post Monday in which he tried to dampen any speculation as to his reasons for leaving, saying he will present at VMworld later this month. In his blog, McCrory wrote:
VMware and Cloud Foundry are both things that I believe in and think they have bright futures. For me personally, I needed a change from a vendor role to that of a customer (which will also keep me in the Cloud Foundry ecosystem). The timing has absolutely nothing to do with Paul Maritz’s departure (which was coincidental).
Still, there has been talk for months about a VMware brain drain and that chatter escalated since the company announced last month that CEO Paul Maritz is moving to parent company EMC with Pat Gelsinger, president of information infrastructure products at EMC, stepping in to lead VMware. GigaOM last month reported that big changes were in the works for Cloud Foundry, including a possible spin-off of that business from VMware.
McCrory founded Hyper9 and Surgient before joining Cloud Foundry where he was senior cloud architect and led technical marketing for the open-source platform as a service.
