Designer Robert Brunner on the difficulties of making hardware and the future of Apple

Industrial designer Robert Brunner, the founder of design group Ammunition, works with a lot of companies that want to build hardware products for the first time. Whether that’s when Beats by Dre first launched its now iconic headphone line, or working with Barnes and Noble on its e-reader the Nook. We sat down with Brunner to pick his brain on what first-time hardware makers need to know about getting into the gadget business:

Brunner also spent years as the Director of Industrial Design for Apple, and jokingly has called himself “the guy who hired Jonathan Ive,” because he convinced Ive to join Apple and lead design as his predecessor. Brunner tells us about what he thinks of Apple’s flat iO7 launch, and what hurdles Apple faces as it attempts to continue as a design leader.

Brunner will be kicking off our experience design conference RoadMap, which will take place on November 5th and 6th in San Francisco. Come listen to Brunner as well as other speakers like Square founder and CEO Jack Dorsey, designer Erik Spiekermann, Airbnb’s Joe Gebbia, Abobe’s Jeff Veen, Behance’s Scott Belsky, GE’s CMO Beth Comstock, RISD President John Maeda, and many others.
