HP joins OpenStack

HPhas joined OpenStack, the open source cloud software project led by Rackspace.

Announcing the news on its corporate blog this morning, HP VP of Cloud Services Emil Sayegh wrote:

HP recognizes that open and interoperable cloud infrastructure and services are critical in delivering the next generation of cloud-based services to developers, businesses and consumers.  It is our belief that close collaboration with developer communities combined with HP’s global portfolio are cornerstones to delivering the right, seamless and secure experiences for our customers.

HP joins fellow IT heavyweights Dell, Cisco, Inteland Citrixas OpenStack contributors, which should help ensure that OpenStack is supported by a wide variety of enterprise hardware and software products. It will be interesting to see how HP participates compared with others. Dell yesterday announced a reference architecture and software tool, while Cisco is leading the charge for Networking as a Service within OpenStack. Citrix has been heavily involved since the beginning incoporating XenServer support and working on a commercial OpenStack distribution.

HP brings its own unique characteristics. As Sayegh wrote:

As the world’s largest technology company, HP is in a unique position to bring together a portfolio that spans printing, personal computing, software, services and IT infrastructure at the point where cloud and connectivity converge.

Aside from its involvement in OpenStack, HP is also working on its own line of cloud services targeting developers and is already selling systems and software for private enterprise clouds.
