John Oliver of The Daily Show to host 2012 Crunchies

Veteran technology correspondent — I mean, hilarious Daily Show comedian John Oliver — has been tapped to host the 2012 Crunchies later this month in San Francisco.

Oliver, also known for his standup work in addition to his long-running stint on The Daily Show as a wacky political correspondent, will host the annual awards show on January 31st. He’s mostly known for his sarcastic political commentary, but he’s not new to the tech world: check out the segment below during which he covers the launch of the Verizon iPhone back in January 2011.

As a reminder, the nominees for the 2012 Crunchies were announced yesterday, and voting for the winners will continue through January 24th. Tickets for the show (a joint production with GigaOM, Techcrunch, and Venturebeat), which will be held at the Louise M. Davies Symphony Hall, 201 Van Ness Ave, San Francisco, can be purchased here.

And here’s Oliver covering the launch of the Verizon iPhone.
