Join NewTeeVee For a Sneak Peek at Catfish!

Hey, San Francisco, let us treat you to a night at the movies! Thanks to Rogue and Universal Pictures, GigaOM and NewTeeVee will be hosting a free screening of the upcoming documentary Catfish on Thursday, Sept. 9 at the AMC Metreon.

Here’s the description of Catfish from the movie’s official site:

In late 2007, filmmakers Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost sensed a story unfolding as they began to film the life of Ariel’s brother, Nev. They had no idea that their project would lead to the most exhilarating and unsettling months of their lives. A reality thriller that is a shocking product of our times, Catfish is a riveting story of love, deception and grace within a labyrinth of online intrigue.

The film’s official tagline is “Don’t let anyone tell you what it is,” but, having seen a screening two weeks ago, I will add that the film is a story of Facebook-enabled romance that’s in no way a fairy tale. Instead, it’s a brutally honest depiction of the trust the Internet can inspire, the value we place on putting a face with a voice with an address. It’s about how that trust can be betrayed.

The film goes into limited release on Sept. 17th, and is definitely a must-see for anyone intrigued by issues of online identity, or who wants to see how a story that initially begins on websites can be transformed into something cinematic. Here are the full details:

Thursday, September 9, 7:30PM
AMC Metreon
101 Fourth St.
San Francisco, CA 94103

Click here to RSVP for the (did I mention free?) screening. And in case you need a greater incentive to attend, the whole NewTeeVee team (Ryan, Janko and myself) as well as other GigaOM all-stars will be there, and happy to discuss the film afterwards.
