Ted Kummert, a 23-year Microsoft veteran and former corporate vice president of the company’s Data Platform Group, has left Microsoft to become a partner at Madrona Venture Group. Kummert led the development of numerous data products at Microsoft, including SQL Server, Windows Azure data services and the company’s growing portfolio of big data offerings.

As venture capital firms look to ramp up their investment in enterprise technologies, they appear to be seeking some big-name enterprise-technology vets to help that mission. Aside from Kummert, VMware CTO Steve Herrod recently joined General Catalyst Partners as a managing director.
Kummert is also the latest in a slew of Microsoft executives to leave (or be shown the door) in the past couple years — a list that also includes Ray Ozzie, Bob Muglia and Steven Sinofsky. However, Kummert’s departure appears to lack the political drama of the others, and Microsoft’s foray into big data has actually been pretty well received thus far, so perhaps he was just looking for a change of pace.
