When it comes to the cloud, the old ways of securing IT infrastructure don’t cut it. You can’t build a perimeter defense of firewalls when the perimeter is amorphous and stretched across multiple cloud providers. At that point companies have to think differently, which is why SecludIT, a 2-year-old startup based in the south of France was formed.
Sergio Loureiro, a co-founder of SecludIt, explains that the company’s product is already in its third release and that it has paying customers. That maturity, as well as the approach to security is one reason it was chosen as a Structure:Europe Launchpad finalist. SecludIT’s Elastic Detector product competes with offerings from vendors such as CloudPassage, but it’s a bit different.
The software is designed to test for vulnerabilities across public and private clouds. It works by spinning up a virtual machine that matches the one customers use and testing that VM for vulnerabilities. These snapshots of similar virtual machines allow the company to test the various clouds without installing software on the virtual machine that’s running the actual application.
That’s good because it doesn’t add more overhead to the machine, but that also means that a problem on the actual VM running the application won’t get flagged. However, the idea here isn’t to test for all problems, just vulnerabilities in the overall cloud. I envision something like this working with other products to reduce risks associated with the cloud.
Currently the company supports workloads running in Amazon Web Services, HP Cloud and Verizon Terremark VMware based clouds.
The company is seeking about $ 1 million in financing to help build out the seven-member team and broadenits reach. Loureiro says that so far the company has found more business in the U.S. than in Europe, but expects that to change as European companies embrace the cloud. However, he’s not averse to shifting his business to the U.S. if he needs to.
He likens that process to the model that many startups from Israel pursue, which is to develop technology and teams there, and when the product is ready bring it to market overseas. But for now, the place to see SecludIT is at Structure:Europe in London this September or in Sophia Antipolis, France.
