It’s looking more like Apple is going to be dropping the numerical naming scheme of its iPad lineup. Multiple news outlets are reporting hearing from sources that what Apple unveils on Wednesday will be called iPad HD. CNET and VentureBeat both reported the product name news on Monday.
The HD moniker would make sense as a way to call out what is supposed to be the most important new feature of this version of the iPad, its high-definition display, or Retina display, as Apple calls the 2048 x 1536 resolution on the iPhone. The current resolution of the iPad 2 is 1024 x 768.
It’s been reported multiple times in the past few months that Apple planned to increase the resolution of the iPad to Retina display levels, or very close to them. And Apple may have indirectly confirmed this when it sent invitations to Wednesday’s product unveiling last week: the invitation included an image of what appears to be an iPad screen with much crisper resolution.
