Soundcloud has 8 million users and a new iPad app

SoundCloud, one of my favorite new music services, has launched a brand new iPad app and it looks spectacular. Soundcloud is a social music creation, collaboration and distribution platform. The Berlin-based company started by Swedish entrepreneur Alexander Ljung has also reached the 8 million creator mark. SoundCloud had 3 million creators back in February, and a million users in 2010. That is quite an impressive growth rate for a venture that started out catering to a very niche community.

The iPad app is accompanied by refreshes to its iPhone, iPod touch, and Android apps. The company has also beefed up m.soundcloud.com. Our GigaOM Pro analyst Michael Wolf named it one of the five companies to watch in 2011 had this to say about the company: “Of all the new music-based distribution services, Soundcloud looks to have some of the most heat, with its app-centric approach to music publishing. “

In a conversation a few weeks ago, Ljung was pretty clear that as the company grows into sharing more than just music, a lot of its growth is going to come from mobile platforms. I for one, am happy using SoundCloud for what it currently provides — a way to discover some cool electronica and chill-out sounds, and for stumbling upon great remixes.
