Windows Phone: does your phone update faster?

Our friend Tom Warren at WinRumors.com has been busy scouring the interwebs for Windows Phone news, with updated information on some Windows Phone update problems, and an early draft of some upcoming Windows Phone commercials.

We told you yesterday that there were problems with what appears to be a small percentage of Windows Phone users, possibly Samsung Focus and Omnia 7 devices using certain firmware versions, that are having problems with the “7008” update Microsoft began pushing out yesterday.  These problems can and have “bricked” at least some phones.  According to a post in the Microsoft Answers Windows Phone 7 thread, Microsoft is aware of the problem and is expecting to have an update in “approximately 3 days time”:

We would recommend at this time, not to retry the update, as subsequent attempts will fail similarly. While we continue to investigate the issue, we would ask that you not attempt the update until your device alerts you of another update opportunity, in approximately 3 days’ time.

Issues seem to be stemming from certain firmware versions, “JI9 and JJ4 both experience issues whereas JK1 appears to be ok”, says Tom.  To check your firmware, if you have the Diagnostics installed (our step by step here on how to enable tethering, just do the first part to get the diagnostics):

I(f) you have the diagnostic app installed, you can hit *#1234# to see if you have JXX, to see if this will work. Mine is showing up as JJ6

will show something like

PDA: I8700XXJJ6

Phone: I8700XXJJ6

WinRumors also reports that some mobile carriers may not in fact be offering the first update at all, but that it would be rolled into the NoDo update so it won’t much matter anyway:

“Some Mobile Operators have the right to skip one update if they wish,” said Diego T of Windows Phone support. “However, they can’t skip the next one, which would be an acumulative update and would include the previous one” he added. Diego says that “if your mobile operator decided to block this one” then you’ll still get the “NoDo” update in early March which will also include the improvements contained in the smaller 7008 update issued on Monday.

And last but not least, Tom scoured around and found a series of as yet unreleased Windows Phone commercials, in draft form, comparing speeds of Windows Phones to other devices.  Maybe what we should be comparing is OS update speeds (just kidding):
