Windows Phone launch event October 11?: Pocket-Lint.com

Pocket-Lint is reporting that Microsoft is set to kick off its launch of Windows Phone 7 with “a lavish event” in New York City on October 11th, to be beamed around the world.  While some are skeptical of the date, as it is a national holiday here in the US (Columbus Day), Pocket-Lint reports that the story is coming from several trusted sources:

Multiple sources familiar with the matter have confirmed to Pocket-lint that Microsoft will launch its new mobile operating system, Windows Phone 7, on 11 October 2010.

Pocket-lint has learnt that the Redmond-based company will use New York as the global stage for the launch, which will be beamed around the world.

Although none of our sources were prepared to be named, all are senior figures within the industry that we know and trust.

Windows Phone 7 handsets will be then be available later in the month, one of the sources confirmed.

Earlier, Microsoft President Kevin Turner announced that Windows Phone 7 devices would be available earlier in Europe than in the US:

“…in the October timeframe and the November timeframe, October likely across Europe and November likely across the U.S. we’re back in this game”

This of course could still hold true with an early October “soft” launch, with handsets actually hitting the marketplace later into October and November.

Pocket-Lint reports that Microsoft had no comment on the launch date, preferring not to comment on “rumors and speculation”.
