As promised, Microsoft is rolling out a security update to Windows Phones today, to update security certificates after Comodo inadvertently signed 9 certificates without properly validating the 3rd party’s identity. Numerous sites reported that the patch would be pushed out today (May 3rd), and indeed that seems to be the case.
Although we haven’t received the update here as of yet, commenters using a number of types of Windows Phones (including those using “Walshied” phones), have been receiving the updates throughout the day. Paul Thurrott has a number of screenshots of the process, which updates your phone to version 7.0.7392.0, and WMPowerUser has lots of comments on its post reporting reception of the update.
Chris Walsh, of Chevron Updater fame/infamy, is excited to find that there have been at least some other updates along with the certificate fixes, according to his twitter stream:

Windows Phone PM Brandon Watson had said in a Windows Phone Radio segment that by using the Chevron Updater, Windows Phone users would no longer be able to update their phones:
“The net result is that it [the updater tool] was putting phones in a state where they couldn’t be updated from us [Microsoft]. They could be updated, but beyond that, they would not be updatable.”
However this doesn’t appear to be true. We’re still (anxiously) awaiting our update, though, and will be feeling a lot better once we receive and successfully apply the update.
