Nokia/Microsoft at Gamescom: just another party?

green logoYesterday, a bit of a buzz was created when the unwired showed off their invitation to a Nokia/Microsoft party at Gamescom in Cologne, Germany, on August 17th, and everyone (us included!) hoped that maybe we’d be getting some news about the first Nokia Windows Phones.

Well now today Nick Eaton of the Seattle PI is reporting that he checked with Nokia, and hope may be fading a bit for a big splashy announcement at Gamescom:

Nokia finally got back to me. Spokeswoman Marianne Holmlund said the event is a local business-to-businesses event organized by Nokia’s Germany arm. “The ‘save the date’ is misleading,” she wrote. So, another overreaction by the press? Perhaps. But we’re just so excited for the first Nokia Windows Phone!

The event does promise a giveaway of Nokia Windows Phones (“as soon as available”), so maybe there’s still hope that attendees will get a closer look at Sea Ray, or at least a bit more news slipping out.

So when will we see new Nokia Windows Phones?  Still looking like this year, and perhaps sooner than later.  A tweet today on the official Nokia Twitter account confirms, again, that we’ll see Nokia Windows Phones this year:

@codeworks As mentioned, the first Nokias with Windows Phone OS will ship in Q4. We’ll keep you updated with any further info

Nokia

Obviously, for both Nokia and Microsoft, the sooner the better, but it looks like we may have to wait a bit longer than August 17th to hear more details.
