Boxee gets more porn with FyreTV app

Boxee users can soon watch more X-rated content, thanks to a new app from adult over-the-top distributor FyreTV (link not safe for work). The app will offer access to some 15,000 movies from more than 100 adult studios, according to FyreTV, which recently also launched a channel for Roku’s streaming media player.

However, FyreTV’s Roku channel is somewhat clandestine: It’s a private channel that can’t be found in the Roku channel store. Boxee users on the other hand will have no trouble finding FyreTV on their device, provided they have access to adult apps enabled in their device settings.

This isn’t the first time Boxee has dabbled in porn. Users already have access to apps from a number of adult studios, including Hustler and PinkVisual. The company also recently launched a dedicated adult app category.

Extending to platforms like Roku and now Boxee is an interesting step for FyreTV though. The company, which was founded in 2006, launched its own streaming video device in 2009. The FyreTV BoXXX was available for rent for $ 9.95 a month, which included a number of free VOD minutes.

However, the market for people who’d put a dedicated porn box on their TV shelf was predictably rather small. Adding the same programming to established platforms could help FyreTV to piggyback on the success of mainstream services like Netflix and get their X-rated fare into many more households. Of course, that could also bring more attention to the issue of parental controls for over-the-top services.
