As Derrick Harris stated in his 2011 cloud computing outlook, while many of today’s companies talk a good game, many are still just paying lip-service to cloud computing when it comes to using cloud platforms for mission-critical tasks However, that could change quickly in the coming years, as many CEOs and CIOs make plans to take advantage of the low cost and scalability of the cloud for key enterprise applications and processes in the future. This move will be reinforced by the vendor-side of the equation as well, as influential enterprise vendors stock up on everything from big data analytics to virtualization offerings.
So as interest in the cloud grows in both the executive suite and on Wall Street, it pays to take a close look at what areas and applications within the enterprise stand to gain the most in the coming few years, as well as examine where the biggest sticking points for cloud adoption will remain.
