Photo-sharing app PicPlz calling it quits on July 3

Less than two months removed from Facebook buying Instagram, one of the many other mobile photo-sharing services out there is folding.

On Friday, PicPlz put up a notice on its blog that it will be shutting down the service on July 3, as TechCrunch pointed out Saturday.

In a brief three-paragraph note, the company called the decision “tough”:

On July 3, 2012, picplz will shut down permanently, and all photos and user data will be deleted. Until then, users may download their own photos by clicking on the download link next to each photo in their photo feed.

PicPlz says it will “move on to other projects.”

PicPlz is one of many of these types of apps, so it’s not a huge surprise the pruning in this space has begun following Instagram’s $ 1 billion exit. There’s also Hipstamatic and Path, to name a few.

But beyond the Instagram-going-to-Facebook move, things probably looked even bleaker for smaller competitors after Facebook’s Camera app debuted last week.
