Pinterest added iPad and Android apps to its lineup Tuesday, bringing the popular platform to more users and expanding existing channels for accessing the service. The company is also rolling out a new version of its iPhone app, and explained the changes in a blog post on its site.
Previously, Pinterest only had an iPhone app, and the company said they were continually getting requests for an Android version. The company only recently stopped requiring invites to join and threw the doors open to anyone, as Laura Owen recently wrote for GigaOM.
Pinterest is a social network that allows users to “pin” photos and images onto virtual boards and follow other pinners, liking and commenting on the photos in a main feed. A January 2012 report found that Pinterest drove more referral traffic on the web than Google+, YouTube, Reddit, and LinkedIn combined. The company, which recently moved its offices to San Francisco, has been attracting some of the top talent in area, Om Malik wrote for GigaOM.
In May, the company took a $ 100 million funding round led by Japanese e-commerce company Rakuten, as well as existing backers Andreessen Horowitz, Bessemer Venture Partners and FirstMark Capital plus angels.
