Data centers in the New York Metro area can now get faster connections to Amazon’s huge US-East data center facilities via a new Telx AWS Direct Connect facility. AWS Direct gives local companies — Telx colocation customers or enterprise data centers that sign up for the service — faster links to that AWS facility in Ashburn, Virg. Telx already offered AWS Direct Connect in the San Francisco Bay area to AWS US-West.
Despite all the talk about cloud services erasing or neutralizing geographical barriers, location does matter in terms of network latency. That’s why Amazon launched AWS Direct Connect two years ago.
As the name implies, AWS Direct Connect lets users establish dedicated links from their network providers to Telx (or Equinix or other data center partner) right to the nearest AWS facility.
Aside from faster connectivity, that lets customers better guarantee the security of their data traffic. This is really important for enterprise customers concerned about the safety of their data and also for Amazon which really wants more large business customers to trust their important workloads to AWS.
Joe Weinman, senior vice president of cloud services and strategy for New York-based Telx stressed that notion. As more companies launch complex, hybrid architectures, they demand better performance and business continuity, he said.
Of course, US-East has been problematic for Amazon. It is by far the largest and oldest of AWS sites and has been ground zero for several outages over the past year. According to the Washington Business Journal, Amazon working with Corporate Office Properties Trust, will build out more data center capacity in Ashburn that would address this issue.
