Twitter’s outages were caused by a ‘cascading bug’

The Twitter team reported on their blog Thursday evening that the day’s intermittent outages were caused by a cascading bug in one of its infrastructure components, not “a hack or our new office or Euro 2012 or GIF avatars, as some have speculated today.”

The outage, which hit in the morning and continued intermittently throughout the day, enraged users, who took to Google+ and Facebook to complain.

We followed the outages as they occurred throughout the day.

“Not how we wanted today to go,” the company wrote in its post. The company said it rolled out a stabler version of the site to help alleviate the outages.

Twitter said it’s conducting a “comprehensive review” to figure out how the problem happened.
