Anthropic Releases Claude Fable 5 as Its First Public Mythos-Class Model

*Anthropic has opened access to a model once deemed too risky for wide release, citing new limits that steer high-risk queries to an older system.*

Anthropic announced Claude Fable 5, the first model from its Mythos family to reach general availability. The company states that Fable 5 exceeds the performance of any prior Claude model released to the public, with its advantage widening on longer and more complex tasks.

Fable 5 shows strong results in software engineering, knowledge work, vision, and scientific research. It also sustains autonomous operation for longer periods than earlier Claude releases. Anthropic had previously withheld the Mythos line because of its strength in cybersecurity work, which the company judged too dangerous for open distribution.

The release includes conservative safeguards that block answers in specific high-risk domains. In those cases the system hands the query to Opus 4.8 instead. Anthropic expects the safeguards to activate in fewer than five percent of sessions on average, covering topics such as cybersecurity and chemistry.

Why it matters

The move shows Anthropic testing how far capability can be pushed while still meeting internal safety thresholds. For developers and knowledge workers the practical gain is access to a model that handles extended, multi-step work without constant hand-holding. The fallback mechanism, however, means users will occasionally receive answers from a less capable system without clear notice of the switch. Over time this approach may become a template for other labs weighing the release of stronger models against misuse concerns.
