Apple Consolidates Sign in with Apple and Hide My Email Under One Domain
*Apple will route new addresses for both Sign in with Apple and iCloud+ Hide My Email through private.icloud.com starting later this summer.*
Apple plans to unify the relay domains used by its two main email alias services. New addresses generated after the change will all land on private.icloud.com. Existing addresses on the older domains will keep forwarding mail without interruption.
The move affects two separate features. Sign in with Apple currently issues relay addresses on privaterelay.appleid.com. iCloud+ Hide My Email has used the standard icloud.com domain. Both will shift to the new shared domain.
Technical change
Apple’s developer notice states that the consolidation will happen later this summer. Any new alias created through either service after the cutover will carry the private.icloud.com domain. Legacy addresses remain valid and continue to deliver messages to the user’s inbox.
Practical effect on blocking
The prior split made selective blocking difficult. Services that wanted to reject Hide My Email addresses risked cutting off users with ordinary @icloud.com accounts. The single private.icloud.com domain removes that friction. Platforms can now target the new domain alone if they choose to disallow Apple’s privacy aliases.
Observers noted that the change could reduce the effectiveness of Hide My Email for users who rely on it to avoid account bans or marketing lists. A domain-level block would affect only the privacy feature and leave regular iCloud mail untouched.
Why it matters
The decision trades a small operational simplification for Apple against a clear reduction in the friction that previously protected the feature from easy filtering. Services that already viewed disposable addresses as a nuisance now have a narrower target with fewer side effects. Users who treat Hide My Email as a reliable shield will need to weigh whether the convenience still outweighs the risk of outright rejection.
