Apple Refines Genmoji With Automatic Suggestions in iOS 27

Apple plans to introduce Suggested Genmoji in iOS 27. The feature will propose custom emoji automatically from a user’s existing media and text history instead of requiring manual text prompts.

Genmoji arrived as part of Apple Intelligence. It creates new emoji characters from text descriptions, with all generation handled on the device itself. Mark Gurman reported in his Power On newsletter that the initial release produced inconsistent results. Many generated images diverged sharply from the polished examples Apple showed in marketing materials.

The same models also placed heavy demands on the hardware. Users reported noticeable heat and faster battery drain during generation. Apple has since adjusted the underlying models to reduce those effects while keeping processing local.

New supplementary feature

Suggested Genmoji builds directly on those fixes. Rather than waiting for a user to type a description, the system scans recent conversations and photos to surface ready-made options. Gurman described the change as an attempt to increase everyday use after the rocky start.

No release date beyond the iOS 27 timeframe was given. The updates remain on-device only, preserving the privacy stance Apple has maintained for its generative features.

Why it matters

The move shows Apple responding to real usage friction rather than doubling down on the original prompt-based approach. If the suggestions prove accurate and lightweight, Genmoji could shift from occasional novelty to a regular part of messaging. Continued performance gains will determine whether the feature earns regular adoption or stays sidelined by the same hardware complaints that marked its debut.
