Apple to Build iPhone-Windows Clipboard Sync for EU Users After Microsoft Request

Apple began work on cross-device clipboard support after Microsoft submitted the request through the company's EU interoperability process. The feature would let users copy text or other content on an iPhone and paste it on a Windows PC, or the reverse, without opening an app or triggering manual transfers each time.
Microsoft described the desired behavior as a lightweight, continuous capability rather than an app-driven operation. Apple started evaluating the request in March and delivered a proposed project plan on June 26.
The change applies only in the European Union because it stems from the Digital Markets Act's interoperability rules. Apple created the request system to meet its regulatory obligations.
Why it matters
The move shows how the DMA is turning routine feature requests into binding development work for Apple. Microsoft gains a direct path to push for Windows compatibility that would otherwise depend on Apple's own priorities. For users in the EU the result is narrower but concrete: clipboard behavior that matches what already exists inside Apple's own ecosystem or between Windows devices. Outside the EU the same gap is likely to remain.
