Apple announced new Mac Studio desktops built around the M5 Max and M5 Ultra processors. The M5 Ultra is the company’s most powerful chip to date and supports up to 512 GB of unified memory. Pre-orders opened on 25 August 2026.

The M5 Ultra uses a quad-die 3 nm design and packs a 36-core CPU with 12 performance cores and 24 efficiency cores. Apple claims 1.25 times higher single-threaded performance and 1.3 times higher multithreaded performance than the M3 Ultra. AI throughput is stated to reach 4.3 times the level of the earlier chip.
Storage moves to a PCIe Gen 6 architecture that Apple says is twice as fast as the previous generation. Connectivity includes Thunderbolt 5 ports rated at 120 Gb/s, Wi-Fi 7, and Bluetooth 6 delivered through Apple’s new N1 chip. The machine supports genlock over USB-C and can drive eight displays at once.
Johny Srouji, Apple’s chief hardware officer, said the M5 Max and M5 Ultra “usher in a new era of desktop computing” by delivering gains for pro workloads and frontier-class AI inference. The Neural Accelerators integrated into the GPU are cited as a key contributor to those AI numbers. The 512 GB unified memory limit appears only on the M5 Ultra configuration; the M5 Max tops out lower.
No third-party benchmarks accompanied the announcement. Apple supplied the relative performance figures against the M3 Ultra generation only. The company did not disclose exact core counts or clock speeds for the M5 Max variant.
