Brockman Locks In Permanent Product Role at OpenAI

*OpenAI has made Greg Brockman’s leadership of product strategy official, ending his interim stint and folding it into his existing infrastructure duties.*

OpenAI reorganized its executive structure last week to bring ChatGPT and Codex under a single product umbrella. Greg Brockman now holds formal responsibility for that combined effort in addition to his prior work on AI infrastructure.

The move ends Brockman’s temporary assignment. He had stepped in while Fidji Simo, the company’s CEO of AGI deployment, took medical leave. OpenAI confirmed to Wired that Simo remains on leave but is expected to return and that she participated directly in planning the latest changes.

Prior arrangement

Brockman’s interim oversight began several weeks earlier. The company described the arrangement at the time as a bridge until Simo could resume her duties. The new structure removes the interim label and places product decisions squarely with Brockman.

Wired reported that the reorganization is part of a broader push to reduce internal duplication between OpenAI’s main consumer product and its developer tools. No timeline was given for further structural shifts.

John Gruber, writing on Daring Fireball last month, noted that OpenAI’s work environment already appeared overwhelming and at times torturous. The latest announcement arrives against that backdrop of sustained internal pressure.

OpenAI did not dispute Gruber’s characterization in its statements to reporters. It simply restated that the changes were coordinated with Simo before her leave.

The company’s decision to keep product leadership inside the existing cofounder group rather than appoint an external executive signals a preference for continuity over fresh outside perspective. Whether that choice improves execution or simply extends the same operating tempo remains to be seen.
