Claude Fable 5 Returns Worldwide After U.S. Removes Export Block on Anthropic

*Anthropic restored access to its Fable 5 model on July 1 following the end of U.S. export controls that had kept the model offline for nearly three weeks.*

What changed

The U.S. government lifted the restriction that forced Anthropic to disable Fable 5 in mid-June. The model is now live for users on the Claude Platform, Claude.ai, Claude Code, and Claude Cowork.

Anthropic confirmed the return in a newsroom post and began showing an in-app notice to subscribers. Rollout started July 1.

Usage terms

Subscribers on Pro, Max, Team, and select Enterprise plans can use Fable 5 for up to 50 percent of their weekly usage limit through July 7. After that cap, further calls require usage credits. From July 8 onward, the model will be available only through credits.

Fable 5 first launched on June 9. Anthropic described it as exceeding the performance of any model it had previously released to the public, with strong results on extended software-engineering tasks, knowledge work, vision, and scientific research.

Performance claims

The company stated that Fable 5 outperforms its Opus models on longer, more complex work. It also noted that the model can operate autonomously for longer stretches than earlier Claude releases.

No other technical specifications or benchmark numbers were released in the updates.

Why it matters

Export controls on advanced AI models create sudden gaps in access that affect developers who built workflows around the restricted version. The quick reversal shows how fragile those access windows remain when government rules shift. Teams that paused projects tied to Fable 5 can resume, but the temporary credit system will push heavier users toward paid add-ons sooner than before.
