The product arrives six years after Google’s previous smart speaker. It adopts a HomePod-style form factor and centers on Gemini rather than the older Assistant.
What changed
The new speaker was redesigned from the ground up to host Gemini’s conversational interface. Earlier Google Home hardware ran Assistant with limited on-device intelligence. The shift places the newer large-language model at the center of voice interaction and local control.
