The deal

Meta and Reliance Industries announced an agreement for an AI-enabled data center in India. The facility will support Meta’s global AI workloads and can be expanded later. This marks Meta’s first AI data center lease in the country.

Scale and purpose

The data center is rated at 168 megawatts. Meta described the site as AI-enabled and part of a broader strategic partnership with Reliance. Bloomberg noted the project fits a wider pattern of technology infrastructure spending worldwide.

Prior state

Before this agreement Meta had no AI data center presence in India. The new lease adds dedicated capacity for training and inference workloads that currently run on facilities elsewhere.

Why it matters

The arrangement gives Meta direct access to Indian power and land resources at a time when AI compute demand is outpacing available sites in the United States and Europe. For Reliance the contract converts existing industrial holdings into high-value digital infrastructure without requiring the company to build its own AI models.
