Microsoft Ships Scout, an Always-On Agent That Acts Before Being Asked

Microsoft announced Scout, a personal work agent built on its OpenClaw model family. The tool is described as an "Autopilot" that monitors tasks and acts on them ahead of explicit instructions. It is available immediately to participants in the company's Frontier program.

The agent targets enterprise customers who already use Microsoft 365 and related services. It differs from earlier assistants by staying active in the background rather than responding only to direct queries. Microsoft presented Scout at its Build 2026 conference as the first product in this new category.

Scout is powered by OpenClaw, an in-house model set the company has not detailed publicly beyond its use in this agent. No performance benchmarks or training data were released with the announcement. The Frontier program gives selected customers early access while Microsoft gathers feedback on how the agent behaves across different workloads.

Why it matters

Scout represents Microsoft's clearest step yet toward agents that operate without constant human direction. For IT teams and knowledge workers already inside the Microsoft stack, the change is immediate: another background process now has permission to read calendars, documents, and messages. Whether the agent reduces busywork or simply adds another layer of opaque automation will depend on how OpenClaw performs in real deployments, which the company has not yet shown.
