Proton Ships Lumo 2.0 With Image Generation and Private Search

Proton released Lumo 2.0 today, the largest update yet to its AI assistant. The new version introduces image generation, image recognition, memory, and private web search on top of a rebuilt backend.

The company launched the original Lumo last summer as an alternative to mainstream chatbots that store user data. Lumo 2.0 keeps the same commitments—no logs, no data sharing, zero-access encryption—while expanding what the service can do.

New architecture and modes

Proton says the update rests on a fresh architecture that supports two operating modes. Fast mode handles routine questions quickly. Thinking mode tackles multi-step reasoning. Everyday queries now run up to 76 percent faster than in version 1.4.

Added capabilities

Users can generate images and upload images for analysis. The assistant also stores memory across sessions and performs web searches without logging the requests. Proton presents these additions as extensions of its core privacy model rather than departures from it.

Why it matters

For users already inside Proton’s ecosystem, Lumo 2.0 removes one practical reason to switch to another chatbot when they need image work or longer context. The 76 percent speed gain and the new modes give a measurable improvement on paper; whether that holds up under varied workloads will depend on real usage. The private web search and memory features test whether strong encryption can coexist with the richer state that modern assistants require.

The update shows Proton treating AI features as another service that must obey the same data rules the company already applies to mail and storage.
