Rivian Software Chief Calls AI the End of the CarPlay Argument

Rivian has no plans to add Apple CarPlay. Its chief software officer, Wassym Bensaid, said on the Decoder podcast that advancing AI will make the entire question irrelevant.

The company has held this position since launch. It ships vehicles with its own interface and treats third-party mirroring as a threat to that control. Bensaid argued that mirroring solutions hand over every pixel on the dashboard, leaving the car maker with little room to deliver its own experience. Rivian instead wants “end-to-end integration” so its software can manage vehicle functions, driver information, and third-party services in one stack.

Bensaid pointed to AI agents as the practical alternative. He said owners will soon reach core app features through a conversational interface built into the car rather than through a mirrored phone screen. Once that layer matures, he claimed, the old debate over CarPlay support becomes “completely obsolete.”

No competing statements from Apple or other automakers appear in the interview. Rivian’s stance remains unchanged from earlier public comments.

The decision keeps Rivian owners inside a closed software environment. They gain whatever AI features the company ships, but they lose the familiar CarPlay apps and maps many drivers expect. For owners who value consistency across devices, that trade-off is fixed until Rivian changes course or the promised AI agent arrives.
