Ternus May Restore Design Influence at Apple

Apple’s design group lost ground at the top levels of the company during Tim Cook’s tenure. Jony Ive’s departure and later exits by other designers left finance and operations with greater control over product choices.

Gurman laid out the ten-year pattern in the latest edition of his Power On newsletter. He described a structure in which operational concerns increasingly shaped decisions that had once been led by design.

Gurman expects Ternus to change that balance. The incoming CEO, he writes, is likely to give the design organization clearer standing in future product direction.

The report offers no timeline or specific mechanism for the shift. It simply notes that design’s earlier role inside the company had faded and that Ternus appears ready to address it.
