Valve Ships Half-Life: Alyx With Its New Steam Frame Headset After Porting the Game to ARM64

Valve bundles its best-known VR title with the $1,059 Steam Frame and runs it natively on the device's Snapdragon chip.

Valve has released the Steam Frame, its first headset since the Index in 2019. Every unit ships with a full copy of Half-Life: Alyx pre-installed and ready to run on the headset's Qualcomm Snapdragon Gen 3 processor. The key change is an ARM64 port that lets the 2020 game execute locally without any connection to a Windows desktop or discrete GPU.

Prior hardware requirements

Valve's earlier VR headsets, including the Index, were built around a tethered model. Users needed a separate Windows PC with a midrange or better graphics card to handle rendering and tracking. That setup created a high barrier: the cost of the PC plus the headset, plus the space and maintenance that came with keeping a desktop VR rig running. The Steam Frame removes that layer by moving the entire experience onto the headset itself.

The ARM64 port is what makes the shift possible. Alyx was originally compiled for x86 processors found in conventional gaming PCs. Moving the codebase to the Snapdragon Gen 3 required Valve to rebuild the engine and its dependencies for ARM64 while preserving the full set of VR interactions, physics, and level design that made the game stand out. The Verge noted that the original title demanded a VR-ready Windows machine with midrange graphics hardware; the new build eliminates that host entirely.

Pricing and market comparison

The Steam Frame starts at $1,059. Engadget reported that the figure has already drawn comparisons to Valve's earlier Steam Machine initiative, which also faced criticism for asking consumers to pay premium prices for hardware that competed with more flexible PC options. In both cases the hardware ships with a curated software experience, yet the Steam Frame's inclusion of Alyx is the clearest attempt to give buyers an immediate, high-quality reason to keep the device.

No other first-party VR titles have been announced alongside the hardware. The Verge observed that Valve has avoided direct questions about future content plans, leaving Alyx as the sole flagship experience bundled at launch.

Technical scope of the port

The ARM64 version targets the Snapdragon Gen 3 system-on-chip inside the Steam Frame. This processor handles both the game logic and the VR display pipeline that previously ran on a separate desktop GPU. Because the port keeps the complete game rather than a stripped-down edition, owners receive the same narrative length, enemy variety, and environmental detail that reviewers praised when Alyx first appeared on Windows. The change also removes the need for a high-bandwidth tether cable, which had been a common point of friction in earlier tethered VR setups.

Why it matters

The port shows that a full-scale VR game from 2020 can be made to run on current mobile silicon without a desktop host. For people who buy the Steam Frame, that removes the largest remaining obstacle to regular use: the requirement to own and maintain another powerful computer. For the broader market, the decision to ship only Alyx as the pack-in title raises a practical question about Valve's long-term plans. If no new first-party content arrives, the device risks becoming a single-game platform whose appeal rests on one five-year-old title.

Pricing will determine how many people test that proposition. At $1,059 the Steam Frame sits well above most standalone headsets, and the Steam Machine precedent suggests that cost alone can limit adoption even when the bundled software is strong. Whether the ARM64 port becomes the foundation for additional titles or remains a one-time engineering effort will decide if the Steam Frame expands VR reach or simply repeats the pattern of expensive hardware with limited software support.
